FAQ

Why did you name the church “Veritas”?

“Veritas” is the Latin word for “truth.” In John 18:37, Jesus said to Pilate, “for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth.” Our church exists for the same reason. We use the Latin word as a reminder that we join history in the pursuit of truth, which is often elusive and polarizing. Truth transcends cultures, nations, and history itself. Because we believe the Bible is God’s specific revelation of truth, our name ought to be a constant reminder to never stray away from teaching the Bible and proclaiming its message of good news about Jesus.

What should I expect and what is expected of me on a weekend service?

Veritas is a “come as you are” church. You don’t need to dress up and you certainly don’t need to have your life in order. We are a church full of broken people. When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by some friendly people who can help direct you to the service or childcare if needed. Childcare is provided during the service. The worship service is large enough that you won’t feel uncomfortable just observing and checking it out. We have a band that leads us in worship and then a pastor who teaches from the Bible. If you don’t have a Bible, all the verses will be up on the screens for you to follow along. On your way out, pick up a free Bible and original worship CD. Our services are about an hour and fifteen minutes.

Why did you decide to start a church in the Iowa City area?

Johnson county is the second fastest growing county in Iowa, and one of the least “churched.” Moreover, the best and brightest come from around the world to study at the University of Iowa, and we desire to see them reached and sent out with the life-changing message of the good news about Jesus Christ.

Are you going to build your own building soon?

YES!  In the months to come, we will be working on a facility design and construction timeline that will help us fulfill our mission to MAKE DISCIPLES.  One important thing to note about our views of a building: Veritas wants to be cautious about never becoming a “centralized” church, where the focus of church activity always centers on a facility. Rather, we want to continue to spread out in people’s dorm rooms and apartments and homes to better foster relationships, discipleship and influence in local communities.

How do I get involved?

There are many ways to get involved at Veritas!  From Tech and Setup teams to Veritas Kids ministry, we believe that we are all in this together.  If everyone in the church is contributing both financially and with their gifts and talents, Gods Church can do amazing things. One of the best ways to get involved is through our Connection Groups.  Let us help you get into a Connection Group in your area. Email us to request a group.
